2 HIDEAWAY (1966) by John Mayalls Bluesbreakers featuring Eric ClaptonFor some people, the history of the electric guitar begins with Mayall’s Blues Breakers album featuring a young Eric Clapton playing a Les Paul Standard through a Marshall amp. Even now, many believe this is Eric’s greatest guitar work. At the time, 1966, no one could quite believe the fluid guitar licks and the biting tone. This album was the basis for the slogans around London saying ‘Clapton is God’.

Here is great info on the equipment Clapton used, including a treble booster.

Hideaway is a Freddy King instrumental that while sticking to the basic structure, has Clapton’s own stamp. It was a huge inspiration for guitarists at the time and since, and many learned guitar copying licks off this album. (Just look at the many guitarists who have put their own versions on You Tube!).

Sadly there is no film footage of this vintage Clapton, so I have put together a ‘Ken Burns’ type slide video using every Blues Breaker era image I could find.

Comments are invited but please no ‘my guitarist is better than your guitarist’!

    @SRone45

    I read that the nickname “Slowhand” was coined during his days with The Yardbirds due to him constantly breaking strings onstage, & having to switch guitars, restring them, etc., not for his “slow” playing that he leaned to later in his career.

    Listen to “Too Much Monkey Business” off the Five Live Yardbirds album…fast as fuck.

    Hey, it’s …
    Hey, it’s interesting to listen to the original “Hideaway” by Freddie King and then compare with this version which is so much more advanced. Freddie was a great originator of material that others later would develop and take so much further, like here. Clapton’s guitar style borrowed much from FK and both he and John Mayall’s style of singing were founded on Mr King’s.. note the characteristic up-note at the end of a phrase.. Anyway this is pure classic Clapton, really as good as it gets!! Px

    @rhydiantitch I know this is quite late, but search on YouTube for “Jimi Hendrix killed Eric Clapton”. It’s a snippet from a documentary, about how Jimi totally slayed Clapton, though I think they stayed somewhat friend after it. Don’t get me wrong, I love both :)

    This is without a doubt Claptons best work. It’s utter genius and it’s never been matched by him again. This song in particular is one of the great guitar songs ever. That tone blew the world away.

    It almost makes you wish he had kept that tone forever. But the man is too much like a river, twisting & turning & flowing onto new ground. There’s no way he was going to stay the same. But he could have cut more than 2 tracks with that tone. That’s always one for full blast volume

Pete went on to write such classics as No Matter What, Without You, Day After Day, Baby Blue… check it out. what a great talent!!
